We have recently had the pleasure of a visit in
Peking from Sir Frederick Lugard, Governor of Hongkong,
and Lady Lugard, who stayed in the Legation for sight
days on their return journey to Hongkong.
I should not have thought it worth while to mention
this purely private visit in a despatch were it not for
the fact that the Chinese Government and officials ap-
peared to me to go out of their way to show marked civili-
ty and courtesy to my guests and in fact made use of
their visit as a kind of counterblast to the recent Ame-
rican visits which formed the subject of my despatch No.
388 of yesterday, more especially as I knew from private
conversations that many officiale felt that the American
returned students had been allowed to go too far in their
demonstrationfor pro-American zentiments and had by trea-
